Where to Shoot

Choosing the location for your family photoshoot is SO important, and something that I get asked about a lot. Take a peek below for everything you will need to consider when deciding on your shoot location.

At Home

There is nothing I love more than shooting at a client’s home or cottage. It is so meaningful to create images in a context that means something to you and your family. This way your children will remember where they grew up, the colour of the paint in their bedroom, and the couch that they cuddle on during movie night.

I always recommend that newborn sessions happen at home. You and your baby are most comfortable at home, and all of your accoutrements are easily available.

If you choose to shoot at home, please don’t worry about going on a cleaning rampage. Just tidy up, and put away big messes - especially in the brightest room in your home. It is always helpful to have a white sheet on hand for a newborn session.

Cottages are another popular spot for shoots. I LOVE travelling to Muskoka and surrounding areas to help families document their favourite moments during the dog days of summer. Remember that family photos are meant to be part of an archive. Images of childhood summers at the cottage will be treasured when you children get older.

If your home is particularly dark, it might be worthwhile considering an outdoor session or a studio session. Keep reading to learn more!

Outdoors

Sunset at your family’s favourite park, or an after-dinner boat ride at the cottage. Getting ice cream from your favourite shop, or hanging out in your back yard. Outdoor photoshoots are perfect for adventurous families who want to bring the beauty of nature into their sessions!

When choosing an outdoor photoshoot, the most important things to consider are the following ::

  • Choose a location that is quiet, well-treed, and not too busy with foot traffic. I love High Park, and Evergreen Brick Works.

  • Weather can change from hour-to-hour, so if you are easily disappointed, considering booking a Studio session or At-Home session instead.

  • If we do need to reschedule an outdoor session we will make the call by 10am day-of. There is no reschedule fee for bad weather.

  • Bugs! They’re a part of life. If you are particularly sensitive to mosquitos, please wear bug spray.

  • Be prepared to walk!

Outdoor sessions are fabulous for families with high-energy children who need to burn off steam. Trust me - they’ll be exhausted once we’re done shooting!

In a Studio

If you are searching for a low-pressure shoot location, I strongly recommend that you consider one of Toronto’s fabulous studios. Typically these studios are available for around $100/hr, and are well-worth the additional investment for the peace of mind of not having to clean your home, or worry about rain!

Because these spaces can be very popular, it is important to make your booking early to avoid disappointment.

There are a number of studios to consider. Here are a few of my favourites!

  • Sol Atelier :: Located in the East End of the city, Sol Atelier is a constantly evolving space designed by Ashley Klassen. The space is light and bright, and designed with a Mid-Century vibe. The aesthetic is stunning, and I love shooting here! This space is perfect for maternity sessions, and for newborn sessions if you are looking for a space that is both contemporary and light-filled. This space is not appropriate for sessions with children over the age of 2 months, as there are many fragile items.

  • Mint Room Studios :: Located in the West End of the city, Mint Room is a larger collection of studios - each designed with a different aesthetic. Many of the rooms are painted white, and have excellent natural light. Mint Room is perfect for family sessions with children of all ages - including newborns. I personally prefer Sol Atelier for maternity session, but Mint Room is a lovely alternative. If you are looking to choose the best rooms at Mint Room Studios, I recommend the Ballroom, Conservatory, or White Loft. I do not recommend The Nest. Mint Room Studios is also a great option for larger family photoshoots (i.e. multi-generational, or multiple children).
